Adding Ceiling-Mounted Storage Tote Holders to the Garage
By Ryan Hurd · Published
My garage floor was disappearing under stacked totes, so I finally installed ceiling-mounted tote holders to get them up and out of the way. I located the ceiling joists first, since these holders need to anchor into solid wood rather than just drywall — a fully loaded tote is heavy, and the last thing I wanted was a hardware failure. Once I had my joist layout marked, I mounted the brackets and set the spacing to match standard tote widths so each one sits securely without shifting side to side. With the hardware up, loading in the totes was the easy part — seasonal decorations, camping gear, and overflow storage all found a new home overhead. The payoff was immediate: a noticeably more open garage floor and totes I can still access easily, just out of the way of foot traffic and parking space. If you're dealing with a similar storage crunch, ceiling holders are a straightforward weekend fix.
