Sprucing Up Grandma's Sidewalk with a Fresh Edge
By Ryan Hurd · Published Sep 29, 2026
Grandma's yard always looks good, but grass has a way of creeping over concrete edges over time, softening what should be a crisp line between lawn and sidewalk. So I spent an afternoon knocking the edges back into shape along her sidewalk and driveway apron. Edging is one of those jobs that's easy to overlook, but it makes a bigger difference than almost anything else you can do to a yard. A freshly mowed lawn still looks unfinished if the edges are shaggy, and a clean edge makes even an average mow look sharp. The process is straightforward: run along every concrete edge -- the sidewalk, the driveway, the curb -- cutting a clean vertical line between the grass and the concrete, then clear away the loose clippings and dirt so the line actually shows. It's a little tedious in spots where grass has crept out over the years and built up a thicker lip, but the payoff is immediate. A couple hours in, the transformation was obvious -- a straight, defined edge running the length of the sidewalk, with the lawn looking noticeably more manicured on either side. It's a small thing, but it's the kind of small thing that makes a whole yard look cared for. Glad I could knock this off Grandma's list for her. Already looking forward to keeping it up through the rest of the season.
