Replacing the Touchscreen Digitizer on My 2018 Subaru Legacy
By Ryan Hurd · Published Sep 19, 2026
Turns out Alycia and I have the exact same problem on two different cars. My 2018 Legacy's infotainment touchscreen had gone fully inoperable, doing its own thing for the better part of six months. Her 2018 Outback isn't nearly that far gone yet -- hers just started with some ghost touches -- but it's clearly the same failure heading the same direction. So we drove down to my brother-in-law Joe's place this past weekend and decided to knock mine out first, partly because it needed it the most, and partly to see just how bad the swap actually was before we had to do hers too. The digitizer is the touch-sensitive layer sitting on top of the actual display -- a separate part from the screen itself, which is what makes replacing it realistic instead of needing a whole new head unit. Between getting the dash trim and head unit assembly out, swapping the digitizer, and getting everything reconnected and buttoned back up, Joe and I had the whole thing done in about 45 minutes. Genuinely surprised ourselves with how clean it went. Touch response was immediately back to normal once it was back together -- no more mind-of-its-own screen. Now I'm just hoping Alycia's goes just as smoothly when we get to hers.
