This is about as simple as a recipe gets, and that's exactly the point. No standing over a skillet flipping and pressing — butter goes on both sides of the bread, the sandwich goes in the air fryer, and it comes out golden and toasted while staying soft and fluffy inside instead of going dry. American cheese is the classic call here, but honestly, any cheese works, and there's no rule against using two or three at once if you're feeling it.
Ingredients
Sandwhich
- • 2 slices bread
- • 1-2 Tbsp butter, softened
- • 2-3 slices American cheese (or any cheese you like -- mix and match)
Optional Add-Ins
- • Deli meat (ham, turkey, etc.)
- • Pickles
- • Condiments (mustard, mayo, etc.)
Steps
- 1.Preheat the air fryer to 350°F.
- 2.Butter one side of each slice of bread, all the way to the edges — that's what keeps it fluffy instead of drying out.
- 3.Flip one slice buttered-side down. Layer on the cheese (and any meat, pickles, or condiments you're adding), then top with the second slice, buttered side facing out.
- 4.Place the sandwich(es) in the basket — leave space between them for airflow. Cook 4–5 minutes, until the bottom is golden.
- 5.Flip and cook another 3–4 minutes, until the second side is golden and the cheese is fully melted.
- 6.Let rest a minute before cutting.
Notes
- • Scale this recipe up as necessary to meet your families needs!
- • If you're using an air fryer oven (like a KitchenAid combo unit) with a full-size rack, you can cook several sandwiches at once. On a countertop basket-style air fryer, stick to 1–3 at a time so there's enough airflow for even browning.
- • Butter thoroughly, right to the edges — thin spots dry out instead of toasting evenly.
- • Works with any cheese or combination of cheeses.
